But today I wanted to do something a little bit different with my denim. Inspired by this photo on my Pinterest inspiration board, I reached for my chambray shirt and a berry-coloured pencil skirt I haven't worn for ages. Not satisfied with the result, I switched the skirt and headed out wearing this...

Vintage leather pencil skirt via eBay, Topshop chambray shirt, Bertie boots, Miss Selfridge ring and necklace, neon friendship bracelet via eBay, Zatchels bag
Mixing casual denim with a dressier fabric like leather is a great way to give your outfit a more relaxed feel. I love this leather skirt but it can be a tad full-on for the everyday, so teaming it with the chambray shirt gives it a more casual edge. Then I threw on a statement necklace (which made my neck blue... great!), grabbed my favourite bag and headed out.
Which fabrics do you think work well together?
PS - How do you like my new indoor outfit photo location? To set this up I had to move two tables, a massive armchair, a guitar and a cat scratching post. And then put it all back. It probably won't be a regular thing...
PPS - The black cable is courtesy of Sky. BLACK cable on a WHITE skirting board... who does that?!
Love the leather and denim combination, I agree it really helps make the skirt work for a more daytime look too! x
ReplyDeleteLove it, especially the bag!
ReplyDeleteLooks amazing! wouldn't have thought of teaming denim and leather but might have to try it out :) x
ReplyDeleteI looove this outfit, denim is perfect with leather and I love the bag and necklace too!
ReplyDeleteLove the outfit! :) not sure I could pull of a leather skirt, but it looks wonderful on you & agreed, the denim shirt makes it look lovely & casual!

haha I thought the cable was trim at first. But I like the new indoor location - good lighting! Chambray and leather look so great together - love this look :)
ReplyDeleteI absolutely adore this combo! I just need to find a denim shirt and I can wear it with my leather skirt :D
ReplyDeletelikee :)
ReplyDeleteWow, this is such a good look on you! haha, we have a black sky cable too.... annoys us to death, we don't even have sky it just belonged to the previous owner! x
ReplyDeleteI love outfit. I would never have thought about putting those two pieces together, might need to try that
ReplyDeleteI am a fan of mixing contrast fabrics, it adds great drama to an outfit and enhances the colour differences in garments. One of my favourite pairings you've worn, I reckon.

ReplyDeleteI MUCH prefer your indoor location, it makes me want read your blog much more. Seriously, weird isn't it? Love today's look too. Makes me want I wear something leather.ther
ReplyDeleteHi Anon, that's so interesting! Any particular reason you prefer the indoor shots? They're easier and far less embarrassing to do, and now I've found a nice spot in my house hopefully I'll be able to take more of them. Thanks for your feedback! :)
DeleteI think it might be because your I find your outside location a bit depressing. I don't mean to offend, please don't take it personally, what do I know? The wall is not particularly pretty and there is what looks like an institutional building in the background: council building? School? The parked cars are not attractive. It is a bit dreary.
DeleteThe background takes away from your more sophisticated and stylish clothes. It looks a bit parochial/suburban. It doesn't match your styling. I feel it demeans it slightly. I like the photos with the door and stack of suitcases in them. Shows lifestyle too and indoor decor. BTW I bought a statement necklace today because of you....!
Hi Anon (wish you had a name!),
DeleteDon't worry about it - it doesn't offend me at all! I have no emotional connection to my outdoor location other than it's close to my house and sheltered enough that setting up a tripod isn't too embarrassing! I can totally see what you mean - the building in the far distance is a council building and the parked cars are totally rubbish. I mainly shoot outside for the light, because I have no real camera skills so am not very good with artificial lighting. Plus it's just me and the tripod, so getting those clever angles is impossible.
You've definitely made me think about the location - I'm not the kind of blogger with a fancy camera and a photographer boyfriend so my posts will never look that polished. But there's something to be said for a simple background... glad you like the suitcases! :) x
Denim and leather is such a perfect marriage of fabrics, and one of my all time favourites x
ReplyDeleteYou work this outfit so well!! Everything has been well thought out so you look prim and polished! If I tried this I'd either look like I was trying to hard or disheveled.

I love that outfit, the leather skirt looks really gorgeous on you, and i love it with that denim shirt, i've been wanting one of those for a long while now.
ReplyDeleteThat is quite some dedication to blogging Miss Holmes, and I love how you've accessorised with the Sky cable!!
ReplyDeleteI love the mix of denim and leather an outfit smart enough for work. I've been wondering how I can get away with wearing my denim blouse in the office.
Ooh, nice trick to get more wear out of your leather skirt. I keep trying on leather skirts and putting them back, not sure how much wear I'll get out of them. You're an expert at rocking yours though.
ReplyDeleteLove the denim shirt! I stil don't have one of those. I think this needs to change. Ahhh love the new spot Jen, definitely worth moving all those things out of the way...haha. I love Zatchels too, your one is so lovely.
ReplyDeleteI'm in love with this combo, absolutely gorgeous <3 :) xxxxxxxxxx
