The Great Wardrobe Switchover

SUMMER'S HERE!

... Okay, maybe not. It's only March and I'm sure we'll have plenty of drab, dreary weather before September rolls around. But after such a glorious weekend and the promise of more where that came from this week, I decided it was high time to perform The Great Wardrobe Switchover.

The Great Wardrobe Switchover is a highly technical process involving the unpacking of summer clothes from storage (under the bed, in my case). If you'd visited me at 6pm yesterday, you'd have found me surrounded by piles of clothes - winter woollens teetering perilously on the edge of the bed, summer dresses strewn across the floor - it was a messy business. But a couple of hours and some serious folding later and I'd packed up my heavy-duty winter stuff and hung up my spring/summer wardrobe. And that means I have lots of pretty vintage dresses to wear! Hooray!

Switching your clothes between seasons is a great way to breathe new life into your wardrobe without spending any money. I always forget about something - whether it's the cute wedges I bought in the end of season sale or the vintage dress I picked up in January. I was so excited to get dressed this morning (I know, loser) because it felt like a whole new wardrobe was waiting for me.

This dress is the one I bought in January - when I heard I'd be doing a photo shoot with InStyle, I rushed out and bought an entire charity shop (hey, a girl needs options) and this was one of my finds. It's a size 18 and comes down to my calves but with some clever belting there's no need for alterations. I love the bold floral print - perfect for a fine (almost) summer day!

Do you change your wardrobe each season? When will you be performing The Great Wardrobe Switchover?

  1. I completely agree about getting all excited about the 'Switchover'! I'm trying not to get too invested in this spring weather though, as like you say we're probably in for some crappy weather again soon! Love the vintage dress.

  3. I would love to be able to just pull out a load of summer dresses from under my bed! but all of my summer clothes are too big after a health kick. But I am looking forward to starting to buy lovely little sun dresses and sandals :) I love your dress! I'll have to get myself down to my local charity shops and see what gems I can find :)

  4. I need to switch over some things in my wardrobe, I always put it off as there are too many clothes and not enough space to hang them! I love the pattern on your dress :)

  7. I love the pattern of your dress, it's beautiful! I've gradually been filtering in summer clothes and I put all my cosy jumpers away last week!

  8. Yup, I did (most of) the wardrobe switchover last weekend too! Although this stems from living in rented accommodation with one TEENY TINY wardrobe. Everything else is packed away under the bed.

    1. Aha, the teeny tiny rented wardrobe - I feel your pain! I have exactly the same in my house and it's a constant struggle for storage. I long for a walk in wardrobe!

    1. It's one of my top second hand shopping tips! Especially with dresses - clever belting can work wonders!

  10. I've already unpacked my summer shoes that were crammed into crates under my bed! I'm not yet packing away my winter stuff though, I don't trust the British weather to stay nice...x

    1. I've only packed the hardcore winter stuff away - definitely don't think I'll last 'til 'proper' summer without my cosy jumpers and jackets! :)

  12. I have had a good clear out, selling quite a bit on Ebay and then spent the proceeds on new summer wear. I finally then made room in my wardrobe yesterday, clearing out the rest of the heavy winter clothing to hang the pretty dresses and skirts ready for the sun - I just hope it lasts until the Bank Holiday and doesn't disappear before I have time to enjoy it!

  13. Ha ha I did this only at the weekend. I never get excited about the summer cos its my least favourite season but I must admit I did get a little excited when I saw some of the lovely stuff I'd forgotten I had. This lovely weather has made me go nuts for pastel colours, something else I don't normally like xx

  16. That dress is beautiful! Gorgeous boots, too. XO

  17. I love the boots :)
I generally keep all my clothes in my wardrobe at any one time. I don't really have a lot of clothes and find it easier to mix and match if I have everything in front of me. I love how excited you are about your clothes, that's always lovely to read :)

  18. I really need to get my wardrobe sorted out for spring, I keep dressing inappropriately for work with heavy jumpers and end up boiled alive by lunchtime!
Very much enjoying the print on that there dress x

  20. I was juuust starting to do my own massive wardrobe switch-a-roo last week...and then it got cold again. :( Nothing more depressing than just starting to feel tan when the weather forecaster predicts two weeks of rain and cold.
In the meantime, I'll just have to jealously drool over all your summer dresses! :)

  21. I think this is a great idea but I prefer to try and make my wardrobe work all year round, plus I don't have the room in my wardrobe or to store things xxx

    1. Oh definitely - I'm always looking for ways to make my more summery pieces work all year round! And anything that just can't be worn on colder days goes under the bed :)
